My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone is a band that formed in 2006 in Connecticut. They played a variety of very mad, very well done screamo. Their demo, officially titled Demo Days, is by far their angriest release, and sounds great. After their demo, they put out an EP titled Heavenly Bodies, which contains one of my favorite songs, "Ethics." Heavenly Bodies was recorded much better than their demo. There's more tone in the vocalist's voice, and everything just sounds more solid. After Heavenly Bodies, they released a three song Virgin Sails EP. The first two tracks of this EP are not much different from Heavenly Bodies, there's a little bit more yelling than screaming, but nothing drastic. However, the third track sounds completely different from anything they ever did before, and is more geared toward the whiny genre of emo.
Sometime in Fall 2008, My Heart To Joy At The Same Tone stopped playing shows, and sat down to write Seasons In Verse, which was released in early 2009, under the name My Heart To Joy, shortening their name like Fear Before did months earlier. Seasons In Verse is a continuation of the radically different final track of Virgin Sails, and is so different from their previous work that their name change was actually justified. Their change from angry screamo to 'noodley' Kinsella-esque emo came as a surprise, but to none's dismay. With both genres, My Heart To Joy does what they do very well, and that is probably what I like the most about this band. Seasons In Verse is a very strong record for the genre. The title track is amazing, even though it is a little bit unsettling to hear a man that screamed at the top of his lungs about Voltaire whine about the changing seasons instead.
I missed My Heart To Joy when they came around last, and was very pleased to hear that they will be playing in my area in January with Hostage Calm, a band I haven't seen since they were giving out their demo for free.
